It was your classic high school sweetheart love story. This DC Intimate Wedding was so beautiful to photograph.
Alessandra was a student at Holy Cross in Bethesda, MD, and Tom was across the road at Georgetown Prep. But, like it was meant to be, the pair met for the very first time at Regal Cinemas, the famous movie theater in downtown Bethesda. And on December 20th, 2010 after a high school party, Tom asked Alessandra to be his girlfriend.
By the time a mutual friend from my high school introduced us, Tom and Alessandra were already an inseparable pair. From the first time we met at a high school dance, I was blown away by their kindness and the love they had for each other. So, when they invited me to photograph their wedding day nearly a full decade after they’d started dating, I was really excited!
But as the story of 2020 weddings goes, nothing can be simple. Alessandra had to postpone her wedding not once, but TWICE! They’d originally set their wedding date for April 2020. Then they selected August…and, once again, they had to postpone.
Finally, on October 3rd, they said their vows at Holy Rosary Church in Washington, D.C. The ceremony was a beautifully reverent one, with only immediate family members present, but the feeling in the room was one of absolute elation.
After the ceremony, we traveled together to the National Mall where we took some portraits. Then, Tom and Alessandra explored the grounds of the National Gallery of Art, laughing, dancing, and celebrating their first hours as newlyweds. All the while, I snapped away with my camera, so happy that this couple I’d known for so long were finally husband and wife!
I feel like Alessandra perfectly encapsulated the experience many brides are having this year when she told me, “I didn’t think I would want a small intimate wedding, but it ended up being perfect.” As couples around the world reschedule, replan, and rethink their wedding days, they are uncovering what truly matters on a wedding day: beginning a new life with the one they love most.
I am so grateful to have captured all of the special moments on Alessandra and Tom’s wedding day. Their DC microwedding was so beautiful! I wish them all the best as they begin their happily ever after.
