I have been getting a ton of questions recently about engagement sessions and what to expect so here are some DC engagement session tips. There are so many beautiful places to photograph in Washington, D.C. There are endless spots to choose from. Here are some quick engagement session tips to get you thinking about your DC Engagement session!
1. IT EASES THE NERVES
I love doing engagement sessions with all my wedding & elopement clients. It definitely calms the nerves before the day. It really allows my clients to get more comfortable around me and get to know my style. I love showing up the wedding day and being a friendly face for my couples.
2. WHAT TO WEAR
Engagement sessions are usually a hour long and that allows enough time for two outfit changes. That way you can get more variety in your photos but it’s totally up to you! I recommend wearing clothes that you are comfortable in and that you can move around in. I gravitate towards movement when photographing my couples so you definitely want to wear comfy clothes.
3. WE CAN PICK A MEANINGFUL SPOT
There are so many beautiful spots in the Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia for engagement sessions. I love being able to collaborate with my clients and find meaningful spots. Where did you both meet? What is one place that you regularly go to together? However, there are endless options.
4. PERMITS MAY BE REQUIRED
One thing to think about when choosing a location is permits. Especially at the National Mall and all National Parks a permit is required for commercial photography. It usually takes a month to process permits so the earlier the better. It can be a pretty big fine if you don’t have a permit. If you are thinking about having your engagement session at the cherry blossoms definitely start on the permit process. Check out the National Park Service permit website for more details and the application process.
5. ALLOWS US TO GET CREATIVE & HAVE FUN
Engagement sessions are just an hour just to hang out with your partner and have a ton of fun. I love hearing about my couples story and what they are looking forward to with their wedding or elopement.
Here are some of my favorite DC engagement sessions photographs that I have done over the years.
